Telemedicine in Stroke Care

Telemedicine Improving Stroke Patients' Survival Rate and Recovery

Acute ischemic stroke is a treatable condition but requires urgent specialist attention. Both thrombolytic drug treatment and specialist care of acute ischemic stroke have been shown to influence survival as well as recovery. The most important reason why patients do not receive intravenous thrombolytic therapy is arrival at a stroke treatment center after the 3-hour time window for a successful treatment. Telemedicine can bridge the distance and save valuable

time.

Telemedicine links emergency-room physicians with off-site stroke experts

Telemedicine can allow a greater proportion of acute stroke victims to be assessed for and treated with thrombolysis. An expert stroke physician in a specialist stroke center, linked in a telemedicine network to non-specialist hospital, can support the caring physician in the non-specialist hospital in diagnosing a stroke and assessing acute stroke victims for acute

treatment.

Reliablity, safety and speed are key factors

Stroke Care is one of the most callenging applications in Telemedicine where reliability, speed and safety are critical factors. The system must be able to handle high quality two-way Video coferencing with simultaneously high speed transfer of digital medical images. Patient data and digital images (such as CT or MRI) must be available through a direct interface to the hospital's PACS1) and Patient Record system.

As every suspected Stroke case must be considered a medical emergency the system must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with fast and reliable establishment of data connection.
